We enter a new Chinese year on the 29th January, just as the Moon enters the astrological sign of Aquarius. The year of The Yin Wood Snake in Chinese astrology brings with it the
opportunity to reflect and effortlessly shed old layers of skin, so we can continue onwards, fully reborn. It reminds us the life is an ever-evolving process. This is indeed a year to set new goals and personal dreams in motion.
The snake is sixth in the twelve animal sequence of the Chinese astrological system. According to ancient Chinese legend, the Jade Emperor organized a competition at the river of all the animals in the kingdom; the order in which they finished determined their order in the zodiac cycle. The cunning snake hitched a ride on the hoof of the horse, who was set to come in at sixth place. Right before the end of the race, the snake jumped off, stealing the win.
They may be wily in nature, but the snake has more varied and complex attributes than just that! It is multi-faceted in nature. Amongst the earliest of Chinese totems, snakes are revered by many ancient cultures. To the Maya, the Serpent was the most sacred animal; Quetzalcoatl, the feathered serpent was the divine deity of the Aztecs and the Toltecs. Even when you look at the Chinese Dragon, you can see it also has a snake body! Its mythical connection to the Dragon has earned it the title of ‘Little Dragon’. Today Chinese citizens wholly believe a snake found in their courtyard is the bringer of good luck.
The year of the Snake is a year to magnetise and attract others to you who will assist with spurring on your spiritual growth. Expect to encounter helpful individuals who will offer guidance and support. Given that the snake new year happens on the same date that the Moon enters Aquarius, it is asking you to become more authentic to your truth and your values and to let your individuality shine through. If you have been ‘waiting’ for cues from the outside world, give them up! The snake responds diligently – it doesn’t react impulsively. You hold the clues to your own destiny. If you find yourself temporarily ‘lost’ in a world full of turmoil, pause for a moment and ask for guidance… and just like the snake, someone will appear to lead you out of the woods.
Career changes may be on the horizon in a Snake year, the snake has the ability to adapt easily to any new circumstances. If you have been hesitating to try something new in your career, this is a year to display those talents that you have been hiding – and not care a jot what others think. Mystery, divination and magical powers are key words associated with snake energy, so if you have always wanted to learn how to read the Tarot or Oracle cards for example, then do it!
The snake’s sharp intuition, insight and instinct has earned it the reputation for developing into the wise teacher. What is it you would like to study? What skills would you like to hone and polish? Is there a foreign language you have always wanted to learn? The snake with its smooth and flexible movements will ensure that any goals, career or home changes you may be pondering will go smoothly, if you approach them with a clear mind and a trusting heart.
Crystals to work with during this New year - are Jade; Nephrite Jade; King Cobra Jasper; Peridot; Olive Jade; Septarian; Peruvian Jasper and Black Banded Agate. Carry them around, have them near you, create imaginative grids with them or set clear intentions. They will keep your vibration high and allow you to shed what you need to in this exciting new year and create new opportunities!
